Three Ways To Help Eliminate Pests This Spring

It has been a long winter, and throughout the winter many things have lain dormant, including certain pests in and around your home. As the weather warms up, you will begin to see many of these unwelcome guests start to move and multiply. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps you can take that will help to eliminate these pests before they begin to bug you.

Spring Clean

There is something about spring that brings out the cleaner in many people. It encourages you to get rid of the dirt and grime that has been deposited by the winter weather and open the house up to fresh air and bright sunlight. But spring cleaning is also a very important step to maintaining a bug-free home. By eliminating places where pests have hidden over the winter, or where they can hide in the upcoming months, you will have a better chance of eliminating them and keeping them out of your home.

If you have inside pets, consider deep cleaning your carpets to get rid of fleas and other pests they may have tracked in. Use flea preventatives on your pets, as well as on your yard. Make sure you follow the instructions carefully when applying any type of chemical so you will not cause any harm to your pet or your plants.

Go through your kitchen drawers and cabinets and look for expired or open food packaging. Eliminate them to keep roaches from having a feast. Roaches like dark spaces such as your cabinets and will breed anywhere there is food and water. Consider putting your flour, cereal, pasta, and potato flakes in plastic containers. This will eliminate the possibility of you having flour bugs or weevils.

Don't stop cleaning there. Move outside and eliminate the debris from your yard and home. Move woodpiles from around your home. While it may be convenient to have the wood piled near or on the porch during the winter, it becomes a breeding ground for pests during warm weather.

Consider using plastic or rubber mulch in the place of wood mulch. It will still retain moisture but will not act as food for termites around your foundation. Ensure your gutters are clean and water is not standing near your home. This can be a breeding ground for mosquitos. If you have a crawl space, inspect the space for water or signs of termite infestations.

Make Repairs

One of the best ways to ensure that rodents aren't in your home is to close off any avenue they may have to get there. This includes making repairs to siding, in and around doorways, and around wiring access points. Rodents are excellent climbers and can access your home through your attic as quickly as they can through your basement.

A mouse does not need a large hole to come through. They really are not as big as you think. A lot of what you see is the fur that is covering their tiny body. They can fit through any size hole that they can get their head through.

Hire A Professional

One of the best ways to ensure that you remain pest free this spring and summer is to hire a professional pest control company, such as Affordable Pest Control, to come and do a thorough inspection and evaluation of your home. They will know what to look for, as well as how to treat any pest problems they may find. Many times, they will be able to see things or potential problems you would probably overlook. Give them a call today to ensure that you and your family can enjoy the warm weather pest-free.
